Driveway Doodles and Lessons on Simplicity

Driveway Doodles and Lessons on Simplicity

Do you ever find yourself drowning in an ocean of to-dos? Me, too. Feeling overwhelmed, I sought solace at the kitchen table, hoping my husband would help me navigate the chaos in my mind. But instead of diving into the lists, he whisked me outside and handed me a bucket of chalk!

As I hesitated, he reminded me that life doesn't always have to be so serious. I started doodling my to-do list on the pavement, adding color and creativity to each task. He taught me a valuable lesson in finding joy in simplicity and slowing down. Liberated to let go of the rush and pressure of responsibilities, I momentarily returned to childhood and a sense of whimsy and wonder.

Amid our busy lives, our minds often feel cluttered and overwhelmingly full. We're supposed to feel full - but not with the weight of endless tasks and responsibilities. Rather - full with satisfaction from a good meal, an encouraging word, or a good night's sleep.

God gives us the ability to manage our lives, make decisions, take control of our minds. But He doesn't give us power to be IN control. When we try to take over, chaos and overwhelm ensues. We're children of the Heavenly Father, being led and loved so greatly and deeply. A child isn't weighted down by responsibilities and running frazzled to get "everything" done. They are free to run to their Father's arms instead; to find joy in the simple, because they know they will be cared for.

Chalk became my reminder that I am still a child. I can delight to know that the chaos is controlled by Someone so much bigger than me - and this simple realization gives rest. Next time I am feeling overwhelmed, I might try doodling flowers in my driveway!

Natalie tends a 2000 square foot flower garden - known as Blue House Blooms - overflowing with color, where she makes fascinating discoveries and writes about life lessons.
