Planning Your Modest Fall Wardrobe
We love fall! Here in Ohio, the crisp mornings and ripening air whispers of vibrant leaves, a bountiful harvest...and all things pumpkin!
As gently as the seasons change, life brings changes. Fall is the perfect time to rethink your wardrobe and incorporate a few versatile pieces that will help you transition from warmer months to cooler weather, without becoming overwhelmed in the process.
Whether you’re planning a backyard wiener roast, a getaway to enjoy the fall foliage, or simply wanting to feel put-together and feminine in your kitchen, we’ve been doing the busy work, carefully selecting modest pieces that will make you feel comfortable and lovely.
Here's our guide for your autumn wardrobe. Think through what you already own and take stock of which pieces you reach for again and again. Use this guide to choose a few additions that will work with what already fills your closet, could add new life to old favorites, or will fill a gap in your wardrobe, making your mornings a little easier!
Choose neutral pieces:
Colors like black, white, grey, taupe, tan, and earth tones are classic and can be incorporated into any wardrobe. They are easily paired and easily layered. You need less clothes because these colors are so versatile and create a foundation for building your outfits. Some people find it intimidating to wear neutrals, especially if they’ve been classified into another color palette based on skin tone or hair color – but keep in mind that if you like your style, if it makes your life simpler and you feel comfortable, that’s what counts. Fall is such a great season to utilize neutrals.
Build in Solid Colors:
Cooler weather brings craving for warmer colors. Instead of going overboard with crimson and orange, however, build your wardrobe around some staple fall colors that can dovetail with other seasons as well. We suggest camel, olive green, latte brown or navy. Incorporate small dashes of gentle colors such as rosewood, plum and dusty blue to accent those quiet neutrals.
Experiment with Textures and Details:
When you’re working with a neutral and solid color palette, it’s important to incorporate subtle textures, such as a chunky cable-knit sweater, lacy open-crocheted cardigan or a soft flannel shirt. Small details, like a raw hem or pretty buttons add beauty without overwhelming the senses like bold colors and busy patterns often do.
Wear Denim:
Fall is the perfect season to restock your modest blue jean skirt selection! As the temperatures drop, the sturdy fabric of denim is ideal for added warmth. Denim is practical for all those fall activities from a trip to the pumpkin patch to snipping dahlias in the garden. And a denim jacket or shacket is necessary when the evenings turn cool!
Elevate Your Layering:
One of my favorite things about fall, is all the layering possibilities! When you begin with a few basic pieces, like a maxi knit skirt and a neutral top, there are so many layering options – just think: sweaters, vests, cardigans, jackets, shackets and shirts! Adding some subtle texture and a bit of color is key when you’re layering, as well as considering the temperature and weather you’ll be exposed to. Also, take into account the entire look you’re creating as you stack those layers. A ribbed vest or a tunic cardi can completely change the style and purpose of your basic outfit, allowing you to easily switch out layering pieces to make your look casual or elegant, depending on the circumstance.
Relaxed Silouettes:
Fall seems to naturally prioritize comfort, so choose those loose-fitting dresses, flowy skirts, and longer sweaters! These effortless pieces not only exude comfort, but an air of understated elegance and femininity.
Cozy is Crucial:
Don’t forget to take cozy into consideration when you’re updating your fall wardrobe. Look for those super-soft sweaters, oversized fuzzy sweatshirts, warm sweater dresses and maxi skirt sets – those comforting pieces that are like chicken soup when you wear them, and make you want to curl up with some pumpkin pie! Even if there’s work to do, it’s a bonus to get it done in cute, modest and comfortable styles!
Plaid for Fall:
Not too many prints are more suited for fall, than plaid! Generally, plaids can be bold, over-stimulating and hard to coordinate - but one or two plaid pieces, carefully chosen for your fall line-up can be so comfortingly classic.
You don’t need lots of clothes; but when you’ve cleaned out what no longer works and made careful choices about what you want to own, you’ll find your mornings become easier. We’re here for you, creating collections of modest clothing, so you have more time for your priories! This time of year, we imagine it might mean lingering on the patio with warm mug of spiced cider, considering all there is to be grateful for!
